Chapter Seven

Waking up with two men had a lot going for it. For one thing, she’d slept right through, something she couldn’t remember doing for a very long time. Maybe because she didn’t have to cope with people turning up at the bakery downstairs at 4:00 a.m., banging and crashing around in the kitchen below.

Light filtered past the sides of the drapes. She hadn’t realized they’d closed them. They were living here covertly, so perhaps they would keep them closed all the time.

She was warm, safe and snuggled. Colm lay behind her, his arm curled around her waist, so she was tucked into him spoon-fashion. Bry lay on his stomach, but he had reached out one arm to touch her, as if he wanted to be sure she was there. True to their word, they hadn’t made love to her again, but they had got into bed, one either side of her, and kept her close and safe until morning. She felt surprisingly good. Until she moved her leg slightly and then she winced.

Colm grunted and turned on to his back. Such a man! He gave a soft snore and his breathing deepened.

Although she suppressed her whimper, Bry’s eyes shot open. His muscles tensed, as if he was expecting trouble, then he relaxed when he saw her. He seemed to wake up all at once, going from sleeping to waking without a pause in between. “Okay?” he mouthed.

She nodded. Bry glanced over to where Colm’s snores were settling into a steady rhythm and grinned. “We’re going to have to stop him doing that,” he said. “I don’t usually share the bed, even when we’ve shared a woman, but this time, it’s different.”

“Is it?”

“You know it is.” He touched her hand. Yes, she did. She just had difficulty believing it, that was all. “Do you need the bathroom?”

As he said it, she realized she did. That might have been what woken her. But she didn’t think she could get there on her own. Bry turned away and glanced at a digital clock set on the nightstand. “If you can wait just a minute, I’ll get you that burner phone. Then you can have some privacy in the bathroom and call your friend and your clients.” His eyes narrowed. “Don’t tell them anything about where you are. Not even if you’re in a house or a hotel. Nothing.”

“Duh,” was her response. She might not have experience in their field, but she’d seen her share of spy movies. What would James Bond do? was one of her private ways of amusing herself. She never thought she’d have to do this in reality. Sometimes she’d imagine she was Bond on a motorbike in the middle of New York taking an extra special package to a secret destination. It livened up her existence, especially when she couldn’t afford too many luxuries. Imaging them was almost as good as having them. Almost.

Had she wished all this, or was she dreaming? Perhaps that accident was worse than she’d thought.
